Response to Provincial Budget
Livingstone Range School Division is committed to providing high-quality education to our students. In response to the fall 2019 Alberta budget, Superintendent Darryl Seguin and Board of Trustees Chair Lori Hodges weigh in on the Division’s financial picture.
Superintendent Darryl Seguin says, "The fall 2019 provincial budget resulted in reductions in some areas like class size grant, classroom improvement fund, and school fees grants and an increase by way of a one time transitional grant. The net result in provincial funding was a decrease of $790,000 to Livingstone Range School Division. Increased enrolment growth was funded and having experienced an increase in the number of students from the projected enrolment, the result is an increase of $12,000 from the Board approved spring budget.
"We anticipated reduced funding for this fall and took a very conservative approach when planning for this school year. Yet, to maintain our current levels of services and due to additional costs and expenses, we expect we will use between $700,000 and $1million of reserves for the 2019-2020 school year.
“We understand that the provincial government is facing a difficult fiscal reality and we are grateful that healthcare and education are priorities of this budget. We will work with the government as we transition to a revised funding framework in the future.
"The Board of Trustees’ and Senior Administration’s focus on classrooms is unchanged. We will continue to strive to provide high-quality education to all students in Livingstone Range School Division."
Board of Trustees Chair Lori Hodges says, "Since 2015 we have prioritized the modernization of J.T. Foster School in Nanton in our capital plan, and we are disappointed that our request was not approved this time around by the provincial government. An updated facility for Nanton will better meet the needs of today’s students and address structural issues to prevent future problems. We will continue to petition Alberta Education for funding approval for J.T. Foster’s modernization in future announcements.
"As a Board of Trustees and Senior Administration, we are committed to making decisions in the best interest of our students. We will work with staff, families, and our communities to implement innovative solutions to strive for an excellent education system in Livingstone Range School Division."
