International Student Program Continues to Grow

Posted on

Students from across the globe are coming to Livingstone Range School Division for the rural Alberta high school experience. The Division’s International Student Program continues to grow, as students are drawn to the safe, welcoming environment of our rural communities.

“Each year our program grows, welcoming more students from more countries around the world, “ says Jas Schmirler, International Student Program Coordinator. “This year we received students from Thailand for the first time, and we have Brazilian students joining us for Semester 2.”

In the 2021-2022 school year, 62 students were enrolled in the International Student Program. In 2022-2023, there were 64 students. In the current school year, registration is at 78 students from 13 countries including Spain, Austria, Germany, China, Mexico, Turkey, Australia, and more. Rural Alberta is a desirable destination for students who want a fully immersive English language learning environment.

International high school students are hosted by local families, who provide a private bedroom, meals, and some transportation. Families include their students in family outings and celebrations and help students improve their English language skills. In return, host families experience a new culture firsthand and increase their international awareness.

“International students add a richness to our communities,” says Jas. “For host families and schools, having these diverse international students is incredibly rewarding.”

As the International Student Program continues to grow, Livingstone Range School Division is seeking more host families in all areas of our jurisdiction. Hosts must have clear criminal record checks and receive a monthly payment of $850. For more information, visit www.lrsd.ca/host or call 403-625-3356.
