Student Summer Learning Adventures

It's summer, LRSD students!

Summer means it's time for rest, reflection, and possibly adventure with an eye to further exploring educational and career opportunities in line with your individual goals. Here are a few examples of what LRSD students have lined up for July and August 2025.

Eve Winter (Crowsnest Consolidated High School, pictured far left) will be heading to Lac La Biche to work with Alberta Junior Forest Rangers! This is a highly sought-after position ideal for those who like to work outdoors and learn about careers in forestry, firefighting and environmental science. Eve is looking forward to learning what forest fire fighting is all about and how this experience can help her after high school. She is happy to be spending time in a different part of the province and meeting new people. Way to go, Eve!

Ella Woodman (Crowsnest Consolidated High School, pictured middle top), Avery Rippin (F. P. Walshe School, pictured top right) and Nicole Pommer (Willow Creek Composite High School, pictured middle bottom) are all setting off for Costa Rica to complete grade 12 core classes with Global Summers Academy for the month of July. Ella commented that taking biology in such a unique environment like Costa Rica is very appealing. Nicole is keen to check out the local food/shopping options and travelling to a new country and Avery is very excited to go surfing and explore Costa Rica, while completing a grade 12 course before the school year starts! Last summer another two students (from WCCHS and CCHS) travelled to Costa Rica as well and raved about their experience. All the best for great marks and a very cool cultural experience for July 2025!

Joseph Boot (F.P. Walshe School, pictured bottom right) has scored a coveted position with HYRS (High School Youth Research Summer Program), specifically for students to apply to in the summer following grade 11. Joseph will be working with a University of Lethbridge professor and will be conducting actual research while earning an income and exploring STEM careers to help map out his future. Joseph says he is most excited to learn from experienced researchers and get a feel for what it's like to be part of a scientific team.

Grace Gillespie (Livingstone School, not pictured) is off to study la langue française and learn about Acadian culture this summer with the EXPLORE program! She leaves for Moncton, New Brunswick on July 27 for this incredible 3-week immersion program for teens - even those with no French language abilities!

We know that cool things are happening for many LRSD students this summer! If you would like to share your summer plans with our Career Practitioner, Lettie Croskery, please email her at croskeryl@lrsd.ab.ca.
