ASBA Award Nomination for LRSD Pursuits

Posted on

The Livingstone Range School Division Board of Trustees has submitted a nomination for the 2022 Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) School Board Innovation and Excellence Award to recognize the LRSD Pursuits Program. The award, open to all jurisdictions across the province, recognizes innovative programs and initiatives that enhance student achievement.

“When the Board of Trustees developed new mission and vision statements and core values in the 2019-2020 school year, we committed ourselves to support the ideals of these guiding statements,” says Board Chair Lacey Poytress. “LRSD Pursuits brings together the very best of innovation and collaboration to provide relevant, flexible, and experiential learning opportunities for students across our jurisdiction and beyond.”

LRSD Pursuits was created to address some of the challenges of our rural context. Under the direction of Divisional Principal Tara Tanner, LRSD Pursuits provides a framework to offer innovative, flexible learning to students through virtual and experiential opportunities that helps fulfill the Board-developed Division vision of “Every student, every day.”

The program consists of 7 parts (click on the links for more information about each):

  1. Home Education
  2. Virtual School
  3. Summer School
  4. Tutoring
  5. Diploma Prep
  6. Pre-Employment Centre
  7. Place-Based Programming

The ASBA Innovation and Excellence Award criteria looks for programs that promote the jurisdiction’s mission; advance student learning and improve academic achievement; are bold, innovative, and creative in purpose; serve a broad range of students and abilities; and build bridges among stakeholders.

LRSD Pursuits supports student academic achievement as well as personal growth and development, reaching students of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, academic standing, and interests.

Divisional Principal Tara Tanner is proud of the program’s early success. “With the tremendous energy LRSD Pursuits already brings to our Division,” says Tara, “we believe we are only seeing the beginning of this program’s potential to ensure the success of ‘Every student, every day.’”

The ASBA Award nomination was submitted September 16, 2022 and the winner will be announced November 20, 2022 at the ASBA Fall General Meeting.

Expressing gratitude for the dedicated LRSD staff involved in LRSD Pursuits, Trustee Poytress says, “We appreciate the remarkable work of all the staff connected to the Pursuits program who work tirelessly for ‘Every student, every day.’”
